Skoda Yeti Facelift

Skoda took the wraps off the Yeti facelift at the 2014 Auto Expo in February. It was earlier unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and currently is on sale in a few international markets. The Indian car market might get this urban SUV in the second half of this year.
The new Yeti gets a similar treatment as the new Superb. The front fascia features a new grille, rectangular-shaped headlight with optional bi-xenons and LED DRLs at the front. At the back we can see a revised tailgate and C-shaped tail lamps with optional LEDs. There are many other changes like tweaked bumpers, rear panels and new side protective mouldings. The vehicle also gets reworked 16-inch alloy wheels.
There are not many changes inside, but the revisions to the cabin include new fabric upholstery, decorative trim pieces and a new dashboard. The company has equipped the car with a three-spoke steering wheel similar to the one on the Superb. The other features include a new tyre pressure monitoring system, electrically adjustable driver seat and cruise control along with keyless entry and start.
Engine and Gearbox
Mechanically, the car remains the same with the choice of two diesel engines. This means both the 2.0-litre oil-burner versions have been carried over. The 108bhp mill comes mated to a five-speed manual gearbox and delivers power to the front wheels. On the other hand, the 138bhp motor is mated to a six-speed manual transmission and is available as a four-wheel-drive variant.
Competition and Price
Skoda Yeti falls into the niche segment of cars in India and the carmaker might price the revamped Yeti in the range of Rs 16 lakh to Rs 19 lakh for the Indian car market.

Here’s introducing the newest member of the Škoda family- The Škoda Yeti. Having won a range of awards across Europe, we are sure the car will be successful in winning hearts across India too. In fact, after having exhibited the Yeti at the Auto Expo 2010 in New Delhi, we have received a phenomenal response from potential customers!

With a 2 litre TDI CR (Common Rail) engine and a 6-speed manual transmission featuring an advance real-time four-wheel drive system, the Yeti is simply irresistible.

The Škoda Yeti excels at offering high level of safety, but also at the wide – ranging use of modern technology. A host of electronic stability systems such as ABS, EBD, HBA, ASR, TCS, EDL, ESP – involuntarily engage themselves when the need arises to ensure stability. Among many other things, the Yeti is equipped with 6 airbags and corner function for fog lamps.

The concept of three independent rear seats VarioFlex provides a wide range of options for arranging the internal and luggage space. You can therefore take advantage of a volume from 146 to 1,760 litres. For the first time, a Škoda’s luggage space has the option of three solutions for the floor and the fixing system with horizontal bars and movable hooks.

The journey of Skoda Laura continues with the introduction of the Skoda Laura marking a significant milestone. The car is a symphony of contemporary styling, unrivalled build quality, frugal engines, and luxurious interiors.
The artistically designed Skoda Laura offers a comfortable and pleasurable ride on all types of roads and sports a host of elegant and functional features. It is also packed with an assortment of advanced technologies that help heighten comfort levels. The car offers optimum safety with abundance of new and advanced safety and security features.

Powertrain & Performance

The Skoda Laura is available in three variants: Skoda Laura Laurin and Klement, Skoda Laura Elegance, and Skoda Laura Ambiente. These variants are available with a choice of three revolutionary engines: 1.8-litre TSI (Turbocharged Fuel Stratified Direct Injection), 1.9-litre TDI PD (Turbocharged Direct Injection with Pump Duse), 2.0-litre TDI PD, 2.0-litre TDI that generate 160 bhp, 105 bhp, 140 bhp and 110 bhp respectively.
The TSI engine is a combination of turbocharger, stratified direct fuel injection system, and variable valve timing. The combination of these three advanced technologies ensures higher performance and better mileage. The turbocharger in the system helps improve engine efficiency and reduce fuel consumption by supporting complete combustion of injected fuel. The fuel stratified direct injection engine technology uses stratified charging to directly inject fuel in relatively small and precise quantity to ensure optimised combustion. Variable valve timing technology helps improve engine efficiency by monitoring the opening and closing of valves in accordance with varying speed.
The TDI Pump Duse engine is advanced diesel technology that plays a vital role in improving engine’s response and better acceleration. The Pump Duse technology was pioneered by Skoda Auto. It comprises integrated injector and pump unit for each cylinder in the engine and helps optimise combustion which in turn, results in lower fuel consumption.
The 1.8-litre TSI is available in the Ambiente with a 6-speed fully synchronized manual transmission and the 2.0-litre TDI PD is available in the Laurin and Klement with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 1.9-litre TDI PD is available in both Elegance and Ambiente with an option of 5-speed fully synchronized manual transmission and 6-speed automatic transmission.
The finely-tuned suspension system is specially designed for Indian road conditions with MacPherson strut in the front and multi-element axle at the rear. Moreover, the rack and pinion steering with electro-mechanic power steering and disc brakes add to the performance and efficiency of the car.

The Octavia RS is one of the most powerful and fastest mass-produced Škoda models. In addition, however, it remains a comfortable and safe companion. The RS design will get your adrenalin flowing and bring you genuine pleasure from driving. The sporty atmosphere can be felt in every detail.
Sporty leather seats with marked lateral support and  an RS emblem stand out in the interior, as do a three-spoke multifunctional leather steering wheel, which is available with the automatic six-speed DSG transmission, and also noble steel pedal covers and a Swing car radio with a CD and MP3 player in an elegant frame together with controls for Climatronic dual-zone automatic air-conditioning.
An attractive exterior goes with a sporty car. The Octavia RS’s character is perfectly captured by the 18” Neptune light alloy wheels, bumpers with an integrated spoiler, an aerodynamic spoiler on the fifth door and the double exhaust. Let’s not forget the tinted glass, xenon headlights with rotary modules, fog lights in the RS design and LED diodes of the daytime running lights.
As the cheaper company in the Volkswagen Group, value for money is sharper than the Golf. The sticker price is, however, only a few thousand dollars cheaper. While you are getting a larger car we expected the pencil to have been sharpened a bit more. Pricing for the RS hatch starts from $37,490 for the six-speed manual petrol and $39,490 for the diesel manual. The wagon models cost an extra $2000. This compares with $40,490 for the five-door manual Golf GTI.
Standard features
Extensive equipment list includes: Alcantara/leather seats, three-spoke leather steering wheel (multi-function on DSG) alloy sports pedals, climate controlled air conditioning, six-disc CD player, MP3 auxiliary input socket, cruise control, automatic headlights and wipers, auto dimming rear mirror, chilled glove box, cooled front arm rest, storage compartment under front passenger seat, 12-volt power socket, 18-inch light alloy wheels, spoiler, chrome double exhausts, fog lights, sports suspension and red painted disc calipers. Wagon models further add a 12-volt power socket in the boot, rear window wiper and silver roof rails.
Design and function
Space and practicality
This is where the Skoda excels. The hatch and wagon models have plenty of room for front and rear passengers with five adults able to sit in comfort and enough room for luggage. Boot space is good in the hatch – 560L with the rear seats in place – growing to 1420 litres with the rear seats down. The wagon models have 580L and 1620L respectively. This compares with 350L and 1305L for the GTI.
The rear seats fold 60/40 and the rear centre arm rest doubles as a ski port for long items.
At 4597mm (hatch) and 4599mm (wagon) in length neither RS model is cumbersome to park or manoeuvre.
Given the sharing within the VW Groups it is not surprising that the dash layout and design of the RS is similar to that of the Golf models. The touch-screen centre dash display is the same unit that is in the Golf as is the switchgear and instrument cluster.
Oddly, the RS manual doesn’t get a multi-function steering wheel so there are no controls for the audio which means you have to stretch your hand to change the volume.
Safety items include six airbags, stability control, LED daytime running lights, anti-whiplash head rests on front seats, tyre pressure monitoring and ABS brakes.
The Octavia model gets a four-star Euro NCAP crash rating compared with a five-star rating for the Golf. This is because the Octavia is not available overseas with standard curtain airbags so was not tested with them.
Build quality and finish
The Skoda models have the look and feel of a Volkswagen; but the VW models do feel slightly better finished overall. This is in line with the product positioning of the cars and works the same way with the Golf when compared with an Audi A3 (VW also owns Audi).
Security features include remote central locking and an electronic engine immobiliser. No security rating.
On the road
Skoda claims average fuel economy of 7.7L/100km for the petrol manual (7.9 for the DSG) and 5.9L/100km for the diesel manual (6.0L/100km for the DSG).
In our real-world testing for the diesel we averaged 7.65L/100km for the highway cycle, 10.0L/100km for the city cycle for an average on test of 8.8L/100km. While this is almost 3.0L/100km more than the claimed average it is not a bad real-world figure for a mid-sized sedan.
Both engines have some get up and go but our pick was the 2.0-litre turbo petrol. Just like the fifth generation GTI, acceleration is smooth through the rev range and turbo lag is minimal.
The diesel engine is supremely refined and doesn’t do a bad job as a performance power plant. However, it lacks the finesse of the petrol version. The limited rev range (diesel engines are not designed to rev high and are best kept below 4500rpm) means it is not as flexible as the petrol engine which screams all the way up to the 7000rpm redline.
The diesel is also almost a second slower to 100km/h than the petrol – 7.3 versus 8.4. We recorded a 0-100km/h time of 8.17 for the petrol model during our track testing.
Both engines now have the choice of a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed twin-clutch automated manual.
The Skoda comes standard with sports suspension but unlike many performance cars it is actually a good compromise between comfort and sportiness. The ride is firm but not uncomfortable although the low speed ride can be a bit jiggly. The RS doesn’t get the option of adjustable suspension like the new generation Golf.
With underpinnings from the Golf it is not surprising that the RS is quite accomplished in the handling stakes. The 18-inch wheels provide plenty of grip in corners and the RS only gets minimal understeer when pushed hard. Even then it is predictable.
The RS’s steering has good weighting and feel.
The RS took 23.08m to stop from 80km/h which is above average for the class.

                                              SKODA MINI SUV

Skoda Auto India part of the Volkswagen Group is planning to launch a mini-Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and price it below Rs. 10 lakh.
“The SUV segment is not growing as fast as was expected. We are looking to go down and are looking at a product priced below Rs.10 lakh,” Thomak Kuehl, Board member of Skoda Auto India was quoted as saying by the Business Standard.                Keuhl added that the company has a 25% market share in the D-segment with the Skoda Superb and 16.5% market share in the C+ segment in which the company offers the Skoda Laura sedan.
Currently, Skoda sells the Yeti diesel SUV priced between Rs 15.4 – 16.62 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The company sold around 900 Yetis in India since its launch in November 2010. The 5-seater SUV sold by the Czech car brand has a premium price tag has kept away many potential buyers who are looking for compact SUVs at around Rs. 10 lakh.
Kuehl mentioned that Skoda Auto India plans to launch a small diesel engine variant of the Yeti this year as well. The Skoda Yeti’s present model is powered by a 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine that makes 140 bhp of power at 4,200 rpm and returns an ARAI certified mileage of 17.67 km/litre.
Kuehl added that a petrol version of the Yeti is also on the cards. The launch of smaller diesel engine could help the company reduce the price substantially. The petrol variant too will be cheaper than the two diesel versions and will likely attract more buyers. Also read: Skoda Rapid sedan India launch soon
In the 2010-2011 fiscal year, roughly 3,24,000 SUVs were sold registering a 19% rise over the 2,72,000 SUVs sold in 2009-2010 fiscal year.

In the last four years, the SUV segment has been witnessing a steady growth of 15-20% every year. The No.1 utility vehicle maker in India, Mahindra & Mahindra sold around 1, 70,000 SUVs in 2010 which is more than half of the total SUVs sold in India last year.
Car makers are looking to develop sub-segments in the SUV category to draw in more sedan and hatchback car buyers from the upper middle-class who primarily demand affordable utilitarian vehicles. In the Indian market, the Premier Rio is the only compact SUV available priced around Rs. 5 lakh at present and has received a warm response despite the company’s lack of brand value.
Mahindra is planning to launch the mini-Xylo in the next couple of months at an expected price of Rs. 5 lakh.

The sub-10 lakh SUV will help Skoda to set a strong foot hold in the booming SUV market. There are lot of chances that the upcoming Skoda small SUV to be powered by a diesel motor owing to the steep rise in petrol prices.
